Türkiye and the European Union: A Changing Power Balance and the Right Choice

by Mithras Yekanoglu

Türkiye’s potential membership in the European Union (EU) has been a topic of debate for years. While many reforms have been implemented in this process, full membership has not been achieved due to political and economic reasons. However, considering global power shifts, Türkiye’s strategic strength and the weakening state of the European Union, it is evident that Türkiye should not pursue EU membership. Instead, Türkiye has the potential to become stronger and more independent than the EU itself, carving its own path toward global influence.

Türkiye’s Strategic Strength and Independence Potential

Türkiye holds a key geopolitical position as a bridge between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. It is a central hub for energy routes, trade corridors and military strategy. Moreover, Türkiye has made remarkable progress in its defense industry developing its own warships, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and advanced weaponry.

In recent years, Türkiye’s advancements in the defense sector have transformed it from a regional power to a global actor. Unmanned aerial systems like the Bayraktar TB2, Akıncı and Kızılelma have revolutionized modern warfare strategies. The Turkish Armed Forces’ effectiveness in international operations and independent decision making capabilities further differentiate Türkiye from Europe.

The Current State of the European Union: A Declining Influence

On the other hand, the EU has been facing serious economic and political crises in recent years. Brexit demonstrated that the union is struggling to maintain cohesion while leading countries like Germany and France are dealing with internal political instability. Economic stagnation an aging population and increasing social unrest have diminished the EU’s appeal to emerging powers like Türkiye.

The EU, once regarded as a model of economic prosperity and democracy is now losing its attractiveness due to internal challenges, immigration crises and the rise of far right movements. Integrating into such a fragile structure would slow Türkiye’s progress rather than accelerate it.

Türkiye Should Forge Its Own Path

Instead of pursuing EU membership, Türkiye has a unique opportunity to strengthen its role as an independent regional leader. Its expanding economic ties with Asia, Africa and the Middle East, as well as its growing influence in organizations like the Organization of Turkic States, highlight Türkiye’s rising global position.

Rather than seeking membership in a weakening EU, Türkiye should focus on enhancing its economic and political strategies to maintain its independence. The EU’s bureaucratic and economic constraints could hinder Türkiye’s potential limiting its ability to act freely in matters of defense, trade and diplomacy.

The EU Needs Türkiye More Than Türkiye Needs the EU

While the EU struggles with economic and political challenges, Türkiye’s growing power cannot be ignored. With its energy resources, defense industry, and expanding trade networks, Türkiye has the potential to become a stronger global actor than the European Union itself.

Today, the EU needs Türkiye more than Türkiye needs the EU. Recognizing this balance, Türkiye should focus on strengthening its independent policies, ensuring that it remains a rising global force in the 21st century. Instead of seeking membership in a declining union, Türkiye should pursue its own path and establish itself as a dominant power.

Türkiye Should Not Make the Mistake of Joining the EU

The debate over Türkiye’s EU membership has persisted for decades, but given today’s global realities and Türkiye’s rising power, it is clear that this path is no longer relevant. Türkiye with its economic, military and political strength has outgrown the need for EU membership. Joining the European Union would be a strategic mistake as it would limit Türkiye’s growth and independence instead of accelerating it.

The EU Has Little to Offer Türkiye

The EU was once considered a center of economic prosperity and political stability. However, today, it faces numerous crises, including Brexit, economic stagnation, immigration issues and political polarization. These challenges have weakened its appeal making it less attractive for dynamic economies like Türkiye.

Moreover, EU membership would impose strict regulations on Türkiye, limiting its ability to act independently. Türkiye has built a thriving defense industry, producing cutting edge military technology such as Bayraktar TB2 drones, Akıncı UAVs and Kızılelma aircraft. If Türkiye were to join the EU, it would have to comply with EU military policies, potentially restricting its decision making in critical security matters.

Türkiye’s Strategic Strength and Independent Foreign Policy

Türkiye’s geopolitical position at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and the Middle East gives it significant leverage in global affairs. It serves as a key energy corridor, connecting major energy sources to Europe while also being a major player in regional and international security.

Over the past decade, Türkiye has expanded its influence beyond Europe, strengthening ties with Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The country is also taking a leadership role in organizations like the Organization of Turkic States, demonstrating its ability to forge alliances outside of the EU framework.

By maintaining its independent foreign policy, Türkiye has been able to act in its own national interests, rather than being subjected to EU bureaucracy and slow decision making processes. Joining the EU would compromise this independence, forcing Türkiye to adhere to policies that may not align with its strategic goals.

Europe Needs Türkiye More Than Türkiye Needs Europe

Europe is facing demographic decline, an energy crisis and economic stagnation while Türkiye has a young growing population and a dynamic economy. The EU is in need of new economic and strategic partnerships and Türkiye’s energy resources and trade capabilities make it an essential partner for Europe.

However, becoming an EU member would force Türkiye into a framework that would likely slow its economic progress. Türkiye already maintains strong trade relations with Europe without being an EU member proving that full membership is unnecessary for economic cooperation.

Conclusion: Türkiye Must Avoid the Mistake of Joining the EU

Türkiye’s future lies in its own independent path not within the constraints of the European Union. The EU is no longer the strong and stable organization it once was, and integrating into its system would only limit Türkiye’s potential.

Instead of seeking membership, Türkiye should continue strengthening its regional and global influence, capitalizing on its economic growth, military advancements and strategic position. The EU needs Türkiye more than Türkiye needs the EU and Ankara must recognize this and focus on securing its place as a global power rather than tying itself to a declining union.

Türkiye must not make the mistake of joining the EU. Instead, it should focus on building its own economic, military and diplomatic strength ensuring a future where it stands as an independent and dominant force in global affairs.
